A conventional horizontal pump fitted with a gland packing would lead to leak during operation/ ideal condition. An engineer’s delight would be to use a cost-effective gland packing pump with the effectiveness of a mechanical seal of no leak during operation. This effectiveness of the hydrodynamic seal is ensured only if the suction head is not more than 3 meters for metallic pumps.
